Education Goals

Goal 1: To introduce working forest concepts and teach their values.
Increasing the public’s knowledge of working forests means better communication between interested individuals, timberland owners, and the forest products industry. That’s why we’ve developed a program designed to give an overview of what a working forest is and the people who are conserving New Hampshire’s forestland.

To find out more about our informational presentations or promotions, call Sean Sullivan at 224-9699 or email comdir@nhtoa.org

Goal 2: Preventing the loss of working forestland to development in NH.
Currently the state of New Hampshire is losing working forestland at a rate of 18,000 acres per year. By 2020, the amount of forestland lost will equal half the size of Sullivan County. We hope to slow the number of acres lost per year by teaching landowners how to manage their land through forestry and the use of Current Use tax laws to make keeping land undeveloped a financially sound alternative to development.

We will be introducing programs to teach landowners about financial and social choices that come with forestland ownership.

Goal 3: Inform students of the many career choices within a working forest.
We have developed an interactive program for students to learn the value of New Hampshire’s working forests and gain exposure to an entire world of opportunity that they usually don’t find in the classroom.

To find out more about our educational programs for your classroom or school assembly, call Sean Sullivan at 224-9699 or email comdir@nhtoa.org

Goal 4: To instill responsibility for our working forests within our industries.
The forest products industry is New Hampshire’s third largest industry employing over 10,000 people in our state and impacting our economy with $1.5 billion dollars in revenue annually. However, without our working forests New Hampshire will loose the taxes, revenue, and jobs that help drive our economy.

One of the ways we insure proper usage of the forest is by certifying industry professionals through our professional training programs. To find out more about our available programs, call 224-9699 or email comdir@nhtoa.org

Goal 5: To instill responsibility for our working forests within our landowners.
Forestland management has many benefits to landowners, the forest products industry and our community. Management by trained individuals assures long-term conservation and enjoyment of our forests.

We teach landowners and other interested parties proper forest management through training programs, seminars and instructional video presentations.

Call Sean Sullivan at 224-9699 if you or your group would be interested in learning more about working with our forests or email comdir@nhtoa.org.

Tools For Education

Professional Loggers Program:
The Professional Loggers Program is a voluntary certification program for New Hampshire's loggers. This program teaches basic silviculture, wildlife management, and improving forestland aesthetics. It also teaches forest professionals about the laws that govern their work and the regulations that need to be followed. Another aspect of this course that is very important is safety. Each person gets instruction on first aid and what guidelines and techniques need to be followed while working in the woods.

Certified loggers will have the basic understanding and knowledge necessary to improve their working relationship with New Hampshire's forestry community

Landowners need to also be aware that most large insurers require that loggers and/or foresters working on their land be certified. One of the benefits of an NHTOA membership is access to our certified professionals database.

To learn more about the New Hampshire Professional loggers program and it's overseeing entity the New Hampshire Timber Harvesting council, call the NHTOA today at 224-9699 or email us at prodir@nhtoa.org.
