The New Hampshire Timberland Owners Association (NHTOA) is seeking a confident, well-organized, and energetic person to manage all aspects of communications for the non-profit organization and its educational 501(c)(3), the Granite State Woodland Institute (GSWI).

This is a part-time position (approximately 20 hours/week) with a flexible work schedule that allows remote work if consistent with responsibilities. The NHTOA’s office is in Concord, NH office. Some statewide travel and evening and weekend work is required.

Requirements include:

  • Excellent writing and editing skills.
  • Self-starter and team player.
  • 5+ years of work experience.
  • Professional, well-organized, excellent follow-through, and strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and relationship building skills.
  • Ability to work with volunteer writers, photographers, and printers.
  • Experience with magazine production from planning to publication.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, electronic communications, including email; and social media such as Facebook and Twitter.
  • Experience managing/updating website and Facebook content.
  • Experience or knowledge of natural resource management a plus.

Specific duties:

The Communications Director is responsible for the NHTOA’s communications including the Timber Crier, a quarterly magazine; Forest Fax, the organization’s monthly email newsletter; the Annual Report; programs for the Annual Meeting and Loggers and Truckers Convention; brochures for programs and workshops; and media relations. The Communications Director develops and executes the media plan that supports all aspects of the NHTOA’s work including legislative advocacy, membership recruitment, and educational programs. The Communications Director collaborates with other members of the NHTOA staff.

The Communications Director is the managing editor of the Timber Crier, the NHTOA’s quarterly magazine. This work includes, but is not limited to:

  • Planning the Association’s quarterly magazine 12 to 18 months in advance.
  • Assigning feature articles to volunteer writers.
  • Taking photographs and assigning photographs to volunteer photographers
  • Writing and editing articles and editorials for the Association’s quarterly magazine.
  • Working with an outside firm to design the magazine.
  • Coordinating with the designer and printer to ensure timely publication of the magazine.
  • Developing and maintaining a library of photographs.

The Communications Director develops the Forest Fax, the NHTOA’s monthly newsletter. This work includes, but is not limited to:

  • Developing content including writing short articles and selecting photographs.
  • Editing submitted articles, calendar items, and other information.
  • Designing and transmitting the newsletter on schedule each month.

The Communications Director develops the organization’s print materials. This work includes, but is not limited to:

  • Compiling, writing, and editing content for the NHTOA’s Annual Report and programs for the Annual Meeting and Loggers and Truckers Convention
  • Writing and designing fact sheets for the NHTOA and GSWI.
  • Developing brochures for NHTOA events and workshops including the Professional Loggers Program’s educational workshops.

The Communications Director updates and maintains the NHTOA’s website and social media presence.

The Communications Director cultivates and maintains working relationships with print and broadcast media. This work includes, but is not limited to:

  • Writing and distributing press releases to print and broadcast media.
  • Meeting with reporters, news editors, and writers to discuss issues relating to landowners and the forest products industry.
  • Developing and maintaining a media contact list.

Wage: Compensation will be commensurate with experience.
