BERLIN, N.H. — At their annual meeting on June 7, held at White Mountain Chalet in Berlin, the N.H. Timberland Owners’ Association (NHTOA) recognized Jon Martin of Bridgewater with its President’s Award for 2025. Martin and his family were on hand to accept the award, which goes to NHTOA members who do outstanding work for timberland owners and the forest products industry.
Jon Martin founded Martin Forestry Consulting, LLC in 2011. His focus is on sustainable forestry and land conservation, which includes maintaining open space, improving timber quality, and ensuring an income for the landowner.
He takes a pedagogical approach with his clients, working with them to create a stewardship that takes into account the history of the land itself and the owners’ goals for it. In addition to forest management, Martin provides boundary line management, field and view reclamation, GIS mapping, tree services, and shoreline assessments for the NH DES.
Martin grew up in Bristol and Bridgewater, attending the Thompson School of Applied Science and then going on to a bachelor’s degree in forest management at UNH.
An active member of NHTOA, he is one of the teachers of a popular workshop on logging safely with a tractor. He is also collaborates with the Grafton County Cooperative Extension on educational programming.
Martin has an affection for his hometown; he is an active member of the Newfound Lake Region Association. In 2009 he put a conservation easement on his own property, which has 4,000 feet of frontage on the Pemigewasset River.
Martin, who was the New Hampshire Tree Farmer of the Year in 2020, manages the land for wildlife, recreation, timber, and water quality. He and his family raise Icelandic sheep and manage a 15-acre sugarbush and a sap house. He harvested nearly all the wood he needed to build his family home from his land and had it locally milled and kiln dried.
